Using a multimeter to measure

A digital multimeter, or DMM is a useful measuring voltage, current and resistance instrument, and meters have a system for testing transistors and capacitors. It can also be used to check the continuity of cables and fuses. If you like DIY, making the car maintenance or troubleshooting electronics and electrical equipment, a multimeter is a useful accessory to have in your toolbox home.

Using a multimeter – Basic Definitions

V – This is the pressure in an electric circuit

Amp – This is a measure of the current flowing in an electrical circuit

Ohm – Measurement of the resistance to flow in a circuit

voltage source – This produces a current flow in a circuit. It could be a source of battery, generator or grid power bank

Support – A device or component that is powered by a voltage source. This could be an electronic resistance, bulb, electric heating, motor or any electrical device

Plant – This is usually the point in a circuit to which the negative terminal of a source or battery power is connected

DC – DC. The current flows only one way from a DC source, an example of which is a battery

AC – alternating current. The current flows in one direction from a reverse source and flows in the other direction. This occurs many times per second at a speed determined by the frequency which is typically 50 or 60 Hz. The feed network in a home is AC

Using a multimeter – measurement functions in the instrument

A basic multimeter facilitates measurement of:

direct current
AC voltage
Continuity – indicated by a timbre or tone
Some basic meter does not have a power of the current range.

Further meters may have the following functions:

measurement capability
HFE transistor or DC current gain
Temperature with an additional probe
Diode Test
